Support Sandy Bay Cycle Lanes Demonstration
August 15, 2010
MEDIA ALERT
Future Doctors and Nurses support Sandy Bay Cycle/Walkway
When: Tuesday 17th August, 2010
Time: 3.30pm (1530)
Where: Cnr of Marieville Esplanade and Sandy Bay Rd
Local Health Professionals and students are urging the Hobart community to recognize the health benefits of the proposed Walk/Cycle way between Marieville Esplanade and Cartwright Reserve through supporting the plans drawn up by the Hobart City Council. This comes in the face of local opposition to the project from residents along the popular road in one of Hobart’s most affluent suburbs.
GPs, Nurses, Medical students and bicycle users will gather on Sandy Bay Rd in tuesday afternoon peak hour to flash signs listing the health benefits of active transport at road users on their way home to Sandy Bay, Taroona and Kingston.
Registered Nurse Liam Correy said: “Telling people that they need to be more active is not good enough any more. It just doesn’t work. There is convincing evidence that provision of high quality and separated facilities for walking and cycling such as the Sandy Bay Cycle/Walk way will have a profound impact on the number of people walking and cycling into Hobart”, Liam said.
“The construction of the sandy bay cycle way would benefit current and future bicycle users from across Hobart. Riders of different ilks will have greater and safer opportunities to engage in the healthy activity that is bike riding”, said Anna Norris a 3rd Year Medical Student.
Last week the Australian Local Government Association, Bus Industry Confederation of Australia, the Heart Foundation, Cycling Promotion Fund and the International Association of Public Transport urged all major political parties to embrace active transport as part of the policy cure for the challenges of chronic disease, climate change and congestion.
“Prevention has been proven time and time again over cure. So it is our responsibility as budding health professionals to inform any community opposition to such progress that health benefits and safety should not be exchanged for a few on-road carparks”said Liam.

Thats what im talkin bout !! I’ll be there for sure.
Do we make our own signs or has that allready been sorted? Either way I’ll just come along and look good
cheers daniel, we’ll be bringing a few signs but make your own if you get time.
Yep, Thats what I’m talking about alright! A Huge lack of public support for the Looney Sandy Bay bicycleway proposal, WOW one ( 1 ) supporter out of several hundred thousand rate payers in Hobart. Although she couldn’t even decide whether to bring her own signs or free-load some from the organisers of this ” protest ” . Typical
Judging by the 60 odd people who came through in the space of 2 hours and given they had only an overnight warning I’d be pretty happy with the support levels generated by the demonstration. (not that this is any reflection of reliability) The citizens in support of sandybay cycleway facebook group has 210 members while the citizens against has 14, half of whom appear to be doing an inside job. I’m not sure who the ‘she’ you are talking about is but your message is rather hard to understand and given it lacks a genuine name or email address I’d be tempted to delete it but in the interests of balance it has been published for the world to see.
Council Ratepayer= Damon Thomas eh!? haha the angry little twit.
Listen mate, just because my arse looks good in lycra I can assure you I am male, ok.
Also, typical of what exactly? A woman? Seems like not only are you ignorant you also might be sexist.
Or is it typical of a “protester” ? If so then you need to work on your comprehension. In case you missed it we are in support of the project and we took the time to demonstrate our support. Get it? No protesting.
Maybe next time your paying your rates you can ask for a clue in return.
you are a fair idiot Daniel!!! you think you are pretty smart don’t you, but you are aggravating the situation. no-one likes a smartarse
go back to your suburb and build some poofy bike lanes there and leave ours alone – you are from south or west hobart or maybe ferntree (greeny country) i reckon
you want to stuff our lifestyle up because we were smart enough to live in a region of the city that is flat – go away – go and ride your effen bikes out in the country and leave the city, working folk(as opposed to you unemployed losers) to be able to get to work without worrying about some idiot on a bike getting in the way. this should get a response…heee hee …can’t wait you are a joke!!!
